KARACHI – In another incident of hounour killing, a man mercilessly stabbed his 17-year-old sister to death over honour in Mominabad area of Karachi here on Thursday.
The incident occurred when a person namely Hayat murdered his sister Sumera. The girl continued beseeching the brother for her life but the suspect killed her by stabbing repeatedly, while the people standing at the spot recorded video.
The accused left his sister in pool of blood and she died on the spot while police have launched investigation into the incident. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had also vowed to eradicate the evil of honour killings in Pakistan after film director Sharmeen Obaid won an Oscar for a documentary on such murders.
“A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness” — a film telling the story of a rare survivor of such murders — won the Academy Award for best documentary short at the star-studded Hollywood ceremony on Sunday.
Pakistan amended its criminal code in 2005 to prevent men who kill female relatives escaping punishment by pardoning themselves as an “heir” of the victim.
